Some time ago I published this house that -as the Eclectic Mid-Century Modern Apartment in Amsterdam I wrote about last week- also is owned by a friend of mine: Daan.
Daan is a communication & pr consultant for a real estate company in Amsterdam and his house is really cool!
He’s a thrifter/collector and, as a consequence, he furnished his apartment with several items from mid-century to the late 70s.
Last time I didn’t do a proper ‘interview’ to the owner of the apartment so this time -and that’s also why it took so long- I did it:
Hey Daan, so..since how long do you live in this apartment?
I live here since 1995 and I have no plans for moving soon.
How would you describe your style?
I’ve always liked authentic stuff and natural materials in all kind of styles. I’m interested in everything is handmade or unique; especially if they have a story to tell. Looking around my house the mid-century and the 70s are represented in the basics like the tables , the chairs, the couch and the art. But I never followed a certain style, my interior decoration just got the way it is during the time and it is still in progress because I like to collect.
What inspired you more when you had to choose the interior decoration?
The painting I bought 15 years ago in a Berliner flea market. It’s a Swedish painting from the 40s: it portraies a man reading to a woman. The style and colours have been an inspiration for my interior decoration since I got it and they still are.
Did you have a budget limit when you started to furnish your apartment?
I never had a budget -Lucky you
- When there is something I really like, affordable and that I think it worths the buy; I get it
. I know that sometimes I have been ripped of but I was also lucky some other time and I definitely had some bargains.
Which is you favorite part/furniture in the house?
I’m attached to several things. If I had to choose I would say my couch: it’s an Artifort from the early seventies. I got it online for 40 Euros and I had to re-cover it with the original fabric. Besides it’s very comfortable.
In which kind of shops did you buy your furnishings?
80% of my furniture come from second-hand shops, design shops, flea markets and from the internet.
When I travel I always like to find something special for my house to bring back home.
Thanks Daan for sharing your precious apartment and your time!

Nice peek! Do you know where the wolf/red riding hood artwork comes from? I love it!
Hello Iris,
It’s a silk screen by Dorien Plaat and is called Little red riding hood (2005)

Hi Iris,
honestly, I’ve no idea…but I know Daan will stop by here to reply to the comments
So…stay tuned!
Thanks for reading.
Ciao.
Love the richness of the teal coloured walls – a lovely lived-in home. Wonderful!
I know you know who designed the chair in front of the couch in the forth pic! Please…I don’t remember it!
Thanks.
Ciao.
Falcon chair designed by Sigurd Ressel (Norway) for Vatne Mobler in the seventies. The seat is made from leather en the base (support) from wood. It is marked at the base . Measurements: height x width = 100 x 78 cm. The seat height is 42 cm.
Marco, thanks for the beautiful photos of Daan’s home, it is wonderful. Daan you truly have a gift for design. From the wall colors to the way you so thoughtfully and artistically display your art, it all comes together in a very, very beautiful way. Bravo
Hey Lynne and Paul, thank you for your nice comments! very much appreciated.
greetings Daan
I love the first photo best and the colors of the geometric painting against the beautiful paint color and then the richness and warmth of the table, so that painting is perhaps my favorite part and the touches of tulips and amaryllis ….
Great decorating skills!! Thank you for sharing!! Makes me proud to be Dutch!! Need to get back to Holland soon!!
Hi Paul and Lynne, thanks very much for your nice words! Daan will reply later as well
If you missed it, also the house I published two weeks ago is from a Dutch friend of mine, Guido:
