Who Alvar Aalto was?
As many of you already know, Alvar Aalto has been one of the most important Finnish architect and designer of the XX century.
Aalto has been considered the father of the Modernism in Nord Europe.
As Finnish, he was tightly linked with the local tradition and history, as we can see in all his works, using natural materials, warm colours, and undulating lines.
Aalto was an eclectic artist, he worked as architect, city planner, interior designer, object designer and painter. He started off from the so called “Nordic Classicism” to move in the 20s to the Modernism of the Bauhaus that strongly influenced him.
Even if he lived abroad for a long time, most of the 500 buildings he designed have been built in Finland.
Of course, also his design office was -and still is- in Finland.
In Helsinki in the 50s he built an house for his family that was also his studio; where the most amazing buildings, furnitures and objects of the XX century have been designed!
