When I was doing my researches to write Alvar Aalto vs Ikea, I found out the the tripod stool was not an original idea but that it actually was in use by since ages!
What Alvar Aalto did, was to re-interpretate the idea of a tripod stool with a specific goal: make an useful and mass producible piece of furniture. That’s how the 60 stool was born.
Also Staffan Holm had a goal when he designed the Spin stool: ”Spin is a stackable lightweight stool that stacks in a spiral for as high as you dare. The laminated veneer legs are bent in two directions and after many experiments and a great deal of effort we are pleased to present Spin at the 2011 Stockholm Furniture Fair.” Spin has been introduced at the Stockholm Furniture Fair and it won the furniture of the year award.
The Spin remembers me the Aalto’s 60 stool for the design, of course, but also for the attempt to create something complete new re-interpreting an existing object. Also Aalto, as Holm, did many experiment before obtaining the 60 and the result was the peculiar technology to bend the plywood legs in the L shape.
I really like it and I want to find out more and more new mid-century inspired furniture, so stay tuned on Mid Century Home
What do you think about the Spin? Is it comparable to the mid-century 60 stool or the Aalto works is still unequalled?
